Types of Hull Paint

There are many tupes of different hull paint. Choose from the list of marine hull paints below.

Bottom Paint

Bottom paint is a type of hull paint that repels growth from occuring on the bottom of the boat. This hull paint is generally applied from just above the waterline of the boat on the hull. Bottom paint should be used if you want to keep marine growth off the bottom of your boat. Fresh water has the least amount of potential growth on your boats' hull. If you hull is in salt water for over a week, you will need to have a good bottom paint on the bottom of your boat. The warmer the water, the more potential for growth.

Ablative Bottom Paint

Bottoms Paint for the hull that self-polishes and allows for vessels to be taken in and out of the water (trailered, lifts, etc,) without effecting the bottom paint characteristics.

Hard Bottom Paint

Bottom Paints that are a Hard Modified Marine Epoxy Paint that do not wear off over time. This type of hard hull paint generally has a higher concentration of copper and is used on your hull when your boat sits for long periods of time in the water without moving.

Aluminum boats require special hull paints that are compatible with aluminum. It is important to use the correct primer or hull paint that can be used on aluminum and protect the aluminum from corrosion.

Topside Hull Paint

Marine Enamels

Generally the lowest cost type of hull paint and the easiest to apply. Marine enamel gives a good gloss finish and a great paint for the do it yourselfer. This hull paint should be used above the waterline only.

Premium Topside Paint

Awlgrip make the most well known topside hull paint. There are over 100 colors to choose from. It requires a bit more expertise than apply a marine enamel since you have to mix a base color with the a converter and a reducer. You also have to make sure you get the correct converter and reducer depending on if you are brushing or spraying this hull paint. It is meant to be used above the waterline only.

Non Skid Hull Paint

Also none as a non-slip paint. This hull paint is used above the waterline in areas where you want to create a slip free surface for walking. Great around steps and other areas where you could slip on a boat.

Gel Coat Hull Paint

Gelcoat, also known as gel-coat, gel coat, and gel coat paint is what has been applied to the outside surface of all fiberglass boats. Gelcoat is really not a paint and is much thicker that other hull paints. It provides the highest protection for your fiberglass boat, but is generally more time consuming and difficult to apply to your boat.
